Innovator of wireless communication technologies



Dr. Irwin mark Jacobs, a pioneering engineer and business leader whose vision and experience are driving revolutionary innovations important to today's digital and wireless communications systems, was honored by the IEEE with 2013 Medal of IEEE. IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization in the world.


Medal, sponsored by the IEEE Foundation, recognizes Dr. Jacobs for leadership and fundamental contribution to the digital communications and wireless technology. The award will be presented on June 6, 2013 at the headquarters of Qualcomm, and Dr. Jacobs will be recognized during the 2013 IEEE Honors ceremony in San Diego, California. The event will be streamlined live at 4: 00 pm PST on IEEE.tv.


From its origins as a theorist of communications Dr. Jacobs success lies in its vision and the ability to take ideas that advance digital technology from theory to practice and successful trading. As co-founder of tech companies, which have provided important innovations he has played a key role in the switchover from analogue to digital communication experience over the past 40 years.


Dr. Jacobs co-founded Qualcomm Incorporated in 1985 and he's from a small technology company, a Fortune 500 company. It helps to bring revolutionary innovations such as code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, which greatly improves cellular communication effectiveness compared with analog systems. Dr. Jacobs overcame initial skepticism and controversy with the introduction of new technologies and lead to a successful implementation and a CDMA standardization. CDMA will become the Foundation of the third generation (3 g) wireless systems.


Dr. Jacobs is also a means of Qualcomm in the development of satellite communications and tracking system for the motto. Use full spectrum technologies, advanced signal processing and innovative antenna design, the system provides the first two-way communication and positioning system for fleet management. Commercial, known as the OmniTRACS system is still in use in the world today.


Before Qualcomm Dr. Jacobs co-founded Linkabit Corporation in 1968, which provides innovative semiconductor technology and programmable devices, which are important for the development of a companion in the House television services.  Dr. Jacobs, Honorary Member of MIT from 1959 to 1966 and John Wozencraft co-authored principles of communication engineering "(Wiley, 1965), who is considered one of the best communications theory textbooks ever written and still in use today.


IEEE life fellow, a member of the United States National Academy of engineering and a member of the American Association for the advancement of science, Jacobs very distinctions include United States National Medal of technology (1994) and the inaugural IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Hall of Fame Award (2009). Jacobs is the founder and Chairman and CEO Emeritus of Qualcomm.

Mobile Phones and Mobile Communication

Technomobility in China: Young Migrant Women and Mobile Phones (Critical Cultural Communication)



As unprecedented waves of young, rural women journey to cities in China, not only to work, but also to “see the world”and gain some autonomy, they regularly face significant institutional obstacles as well as deep-seated anti-rural prejudices. Based on immersive fieldwork, Cara Wallis provides an intimate portrait of the social, cultural, and economic implications of mobile communication for a group of young women engaged in unskilled service work in Beijing, where they live and work for indefinite periods of time.

 

While simultaneously situating her work within the fields of feminist studies, technology studies, and communication theory, Wallis explores the way in which the cell phone has been integrated into the transforming social structures and practices of contemporary China, and the ways in which mobile technology enables rural young women—a population that has been traditionally marginalized and deemed as “backward” and “other”—to participate in and create culture, allowing them to perform a modern, rural-urban identity. In this theoretically rich and empirically grounded analysis,Wallis provides original insight into the co-construction of technology and subjectivity as well as the multiple forces that shape contemporary China.
