GameChanger Charity Launch Campaign to Benefit Kids

According to some estimates, more than $34 billion of cell phones sit idle in drawers of homes across America. Fifty million tons of e-waste is produced each year. In fact, an estimated 70 percent of heavy metal in landfills consists of discarded electronics.

That’s why the Irvine Public Schools Foundation (IPSF) and GameChanger Charity, which collects donated electronics and applies proceeds to benefit children, have partnered on a year-long campaign that brings together the schools, businesses, and community of Irvine to do their part in helping save the planet – and improving the lives of kids and schools along the way.

The campaign includes outreach throughout Irvine.  All electronic devices collected during the campaign will be wiped clean and recycled or resold.  All funds resulting from the donated devices will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the City of Irvine, with proceeds dedicated to helping school kids throughout Irvine.

“It’s stunning when you look at how many used electronics sit idle on our shelves, in our drawers or on our desks and it’s even more shocking when you look at the impact of disposed electronics on our environment,” said Neda Eaton, CEO of IPSF. “While we love technology and the pace of innovation, we need to also ensure that we’re advancing society in a meaningful and sustainable way.”

“We’re making it easier for people to take that small step of getting rid of their old cell phones, electronics and other devices,” said Jim Carol, founder of GameChanger Charity. “Not only will they be helping to keep hazardous materials out of the ground, but they’ll also be benefiting kids who really need our help.”

Donated electronics will be received at GameChanger’s processing center and warehouse, providing a secure and transparent chain of custody.  For devices that contain memory, GameChanger enacts a rigorous data destruction procedure that provides security and prepares each item for recycling or resale.  The chain of custody is designed to provide peace of mind to donors, as well as a guarantee that non-working units will not be shipped to landfills or overseas.

Those interested in donating their electronic devices can do so in just minutes by simply visiting www.donatedevices.org  and selecting the item they wish to donate.  GameChanger will then send a prepaid return envelope or container for shipping the device via US mail. GameChanger’s secure online system shows the value of the donated device and the total amount, including the City’s match that will be contributed.

For Irvine-based corporations who want to get involved, GameChanger will make arrangements to conveniently manage all large donations of new and used electronics.  Those interested can call (800) 880-2929 or send an email to info@gamechangercharity.org to get started.  GameChanger provides a secure chain of custody along with Basel-compliant e-waste services as well as an itemized receipt of donations for tax records.

Added Carol: “It’s simple, safe and 100 percent guaranteed that nothing ever ends in a landfill or is shipped overseas. You can help by donating a device -- or even a pallet full of devices -- and helping the children and schools of Irvine.”

About DonateGames and GameChanger Charity

With the support of gaming companies such as Xbox and Activision, DonateGames has collected donated videogames and gear, converting those used items into hundreds of thousands of dollars for children with life-threatening illnesses. The organization recently introduced the GameChanger Charity with the expanded objective of saving the planet while helping kids with significant illness.  The charity was founded by serial entrepreneur Jim Carol and his son Taylor, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in 2007.  Taylor’s cancer is now in remission and he is an incoming freshman at Harvard later this fall.

Prior to founding DonateGames, Jim co-founded Packetvideo, a successful mobile phone software start- up company.  He currently serves on several not-for-profit boards, including the Orange County Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Given his background, Jim created a charity to operate like a business, but with the sole interest of dedicating the output into funds that help others.  According to Jim, it only seemed natural to create a software platform so that people could donate new or used electronics easily and efficiently.

Bishop Verot Unveils 1:1 iPad Program, First Phase Set to Launch August 2013

Bishop Verot Catholic High School unveiled its plans in January to be among the first in Southwest Florida to adopt a 1:1 iPad program.  The iPads are a part of a $250,000 investment in technology that will be implemented by Bishop Verot as part of its long range strategic plan. The program will launch with the incoming freshmen class as a first phase to outfit every student, teacher, and administrator with an iPad device.

The initiative will transition the traditional classroom into a new digital learning environment, allowing both students and teachers to utilize the power of the iPad to create a dynamic learning environment to meet the wide ranging needs of students with the assistance of a multitude of apps and real-time information.

“The devices are more than just a fancy way to take notes,” said Principal John Cavell. “Our goal is to give students the ability to empower their education and there are thousands of apps available in the iTunes store that can assist students with differentiated learning techniques and skill reinforcement.”

The iPad program will require a major upgrade to the schools’ infrastructure to handle the nearly 1,000 devices that will be on the network at any given time. 15 new wireless access points were recently added, hardwired by new CAT5e Ethernet lines installed earlier this spring and carried by fiber optic lines that can handle the future growth of the school.

The school will totally integrate the iPads through the installation of Apple TV devices in each classroom and through the installation of a new mobile device management system (MDM). The MDM will enable the administration to push apps purchased in bulk from the iTunes store to student’s devices while allowing teachers to distribute test, quizzes and documents with the swipe of a finger.

“With the installation of Apple TV, teachers will be liberated from the front of the classroom while providing an all encompassing learning experience to students with visual, auditory, verbal and participatory cues,” said Cavell.

The iPad is inspiring learning and creativity in schools around the country and Bishop Verot is proud to offer such a program in Southwest Florida.

PROGRAM FACTS

What is a 1:1 iPad program?

A 1:1 program represents the most comprehensive technology integration program available for instructional purposes. It requires that every student involved in the program have direct access to a personal computing device at all times.

Is the iPad covered under any insurance plan?

Insurance is included in the yearly lease cost. Students will incur a $150 deductible for each claim made. In the case of theft from a car or home, it may be covered under a personal insurance plan.

Do students need to purchase a case for the iPad?

Bishop Verot will provide a case for the iPad that students are required to use at all times.

What type of iPad?

The iPad model will be an Apple iPad with Retina Display with 32 GB of memory.

Why the iPad and not netbooks/laptops?

The iPad is a lightweight and versatile device with all the power and speed of a laptop. The iPad requires minimal maintenance, connects to thousands of applications and textbook licenses via the iTunes store, and when fully charged can run for up to 10 hours.

Can students opt out of participating in the 1:1 program?

No. All students will be engaged in instruction through the iPad medium.

How will the school manage the devices?

Bishop Verot will utilize a Mobile Device Management suite installed on each iPad. The MDM suite allows the school to register each device on our server, where we can control the settings of the device, apply rules, and remotely lock/wipe and send out over the air software updates?

Is it restricted solely for school purposes? Can students put personal info on it- personal apps, photos, etc?

Students are encouraged to integrate their iPad into their everyday life. So long as the content is appropriate and does not violate any policies written in the handbook, students may upload pictures, download personal apps, and use the web freely.

During the school day, social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter will be blocked by our MDM system.

Is a credit card required to download and install software?

No credit card is required; Bishop Verot will setup a free Apple ID for each student, which gives them the ability to download apps. The school will purchase all required apps for students and place on their iPad through our MDM suite.

Will students use the iPad in every course?

The iPad will be the student’s tool to use at school. Bishop Verot is implementing a professional development program with all teachers on the use of the iPad in the classroom. We expect that how it is used will vary based on subject area. The expectation is that the iPad will be utilized across all disciplines as a tool for interactive presentations, data gathering and analysis; creative writing, and in class processing of content.

What happens when I graduate- do students keep it or is it the schools property?

If a student leases an iPad for all four years and graduates from Bishop Verot, they will own the iPad. After graduation, the school will remove the MDM system, thus taking the schools’ control off of the iPad.

Tactical-Strategy Nerds at Threadbare Games launch Shifts for iPad

Humans have been exterminated from the known universe. Armed with creation bombs, the last survivors travel through the unexplored regions of the universe in hopes of colonizing new planets.

Starting today, iPad gamers world-wide can travel the stars on a desperate mission to save our species by purchasing the turn-based, strategy-survival Shifts from the Apple iTunes App Store.

“Space can kill you,” said Zach Larson, Threadbare Games CEO and co-founder. “We made Shifts so the player would feel that. Yes, you’ve got to accomplish the mission but you’ve got to be really careful about how you’re going to stay alive if you’re even going to have a chance.”

“It’s a fragile situation that you’re in,” explained Jamie Lewandowski, Threadbare’s game designer and resident super villain. “Every decision is meaningful. You want to just explore space like it’s your backyard? Go right ahead. But guess what, you’re going to die.”

Shifts puts you in command of the last five human survivors in the universe. Each turn, two of these survivors must pilot the ship through interfacing (communing with their half-alien spacecraft). Each interfaced crewmember grants the ship a unique special power.

Meanwhile, the remaining three crewmembers go “on shift” to deal with a ship crisis suited to their expertise. As the crisis list grows, the player must prioritize the need for a special ability against the need to keep crises from reaching life-threatening levels.

Every new play starts with a randomized map, guaranteeing a fresh and deadly challenge. As Zach Larson explained, “Ultimately, Shifts is about dealing with the unknown by being resourceful with a very limited toolbox. It’s not easy but you feel awesome when you get it right.”
