The iPad Vs iPhone, Top Gadgets of Apple

Since the introduction of the iPad from Apple, people have wondered, what is the comparison of an iPhone vs. iPad? Should people really own both pieces of hardware? Why won't one work over the other for things such as reading, surfing the web, and movie viewing? The pieces of technology seem to complete the same tasks in different ways. However, there are five main points to consider when comparing the iPhone to the iPad.

The first point is the memory space available. While the iPad and iPhone offer comparable 32 GB flash drives, the iPad takes a step further to offer an additional available 64 GB flash drive. For memory and storage, the iPad wins over the iPhone, and is worth the investment for extra memory needs.

The second point when comparing the iPhone vs. iPad is the screen resolution. This comparison seems a no brainer, since the iPad is a bigger piece of equipment with more pixel space. In fact, the space available allows the iPad to promote a 1,024x768 pixel resolution, while the iPhone can only advertise 480x320 pixels.

The keyboard brings point number three to the comparison. iPhone hosts a small keyboard, because, well, it's a phone. The QWERTY keyboard of the iPad is bigger, easier to read, and spread out. The iPad keyboard is quicker for individuals used to home computers or for larger fingers.

As is Apple's style, they have created iPad only applications. The iPad features, and secures, applications which can only be run on the iPad. For example, Netflix is streaming movies to the iPad, but not the iPhone. Again, with the higher resolution mentioned above, movies would be easier to view on the iPad. This monopolizing of applications is a simple, yet important, difference in the iPhone vs. iPad discussion.

Finally, the last point in the argument is the Internet service offered to both pieces of hardware. The iPhone insists on a cellular Internet service plan, which can be costly. The iPad offers the same service with no service plan. The iPad is only available in Wi-Fi version, unless the buyer opts for the Wi-Fi plus 3G model. In this case, the owner is forced to use AT&T service to log in, but there is still no contract.

The iPad and the iPhone are both brainchildren of Apple. Seemingly the same piece of equipment extended on each other, this is not the case. They differentiate in the Internet service provided, the applications offered, the keyboard size, the screen resolution, and the available memory space. For the busy Apple user and customer, both pieces of hardware may benefit to fit every style of work needed and personal use required.

We're Not Sharing. Australian Telcos Not Adopting USA Shared Plan Model

If you're a multi device household, you'll love what US telcos are doing with their new shared data plans but in Australia, our telcos won't be giving you a taste of it in 2013.

Telco comparison site WhistleOut has confirmed that Australian telcos won't be following the big two US telcos in offering families the opportunity to share their included plan allocations on their mobiles between family members or between devices as an official plan feature. For a couple with two new high-end phones on contract and a new iPad Mini, shared plans can save more than $1600 over 24 months when compared to the equivalent plans from Australian carriers, Telstra and Optus.

ATT and Verizon Wireless, the two biggest carriers in the US have both introduced shared plans to formally embrace the multi-device household, with Verizon Wireless recognising this as the future and completely disbanding all standard non-shareable plans. ATT provides both individual and shared plans.

A shareable data plan means that the calls and data allowance in a plan can be shared between two or more devices owned by the customer or between family members on the same account. Historically, individual plans meant that a customer needed a plan for each device, as is the case in Australia.

Share plans offer significant savings to US consumers. As an example, a shared US plan offers unlimited calls and a data pool of 4GB per month. If you've got an iPad and want access to this data pool, for just $10 you can add a new line to tap into this data pool, giving both devices access to the data bucket. Adding a second smartphone to access this pool is $40 per month, giving the second smartphone unlimited calls and access to the data bucket.

The comparison chart below shows that while US mobile phone plans may be more expensive initially than the Australian equivalent, shareable plans get cheaper the more devices and users that are added to it. The multi-device household is here in Australia (there are more mobile phones than people), but Australian telcos are not supporting the trend with shared plans.

Today, Australian carriers still utilise the billing model of each device requiring a separate monthly plan and fee. WhistleOut has confirmed with each of the major carriers: Optus, Telstra, and Vodafone and Virgin Mobile as well as several independents including Vaya and Live Connected, that shared plans are not on the horizon for 2013.

In one household, a family could have multiple phone contracts and iPad plans at once, with each different device having its own plan and data usage allowance, none of which are shareable across devices right now and won't be this year.

Crazy John’s had previously offered shareable data plans, however these plans were removed from sale as the brand is merged into Vodafone. Virgin, Telstra and Optus have shareable plans available to their business customers only, so it is consumers and families who are missing out.

Australian startup WhistleOut is now delivering extensive telco comparisons for the US market with unique comparison of mobile phone plans (http://www.whistleout.com/CellPhones) from all the major US carriers as well as comparisons for all major telco providers in Australia (http://www.whistleout.com.au/)

Time Warner Cable's TWC TV app will add some VOD, live TV streaming while away from home

Time Warner Cable has expanded its TWC TV IP streaming of broadcast television to several different platforms since its launch two years ago, but so far it's been limited to use inside subscriber's homes. That will change tomorrow, according to a tipster who informed us a new version of the iOS app is coming that allows out of home streaming. This source previously gave us an early heads up on TWC TV for Roku, which just launched last month. The video doesn't include all of the channels that are a part of TWC TV, but will feature video on-demand from channels like BBC America, BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nick, and Univision, among others. There will be ten live TV channels as well: Aspire, BBC America, beIn, Big Ten Network, FearNet, Fox News Channel, Fox business, GMC, Pac-12 Network and TV Guide Network

The web portal will also be revamped in May, and Android users should expect an update in Q2 with access to streaming away from home. However, there are still a few strings. From what we've heard, streaming over 3G / 4G will be limited to Verizon Wireless until Q4, but all users will be able to access the video streams over WiFi. Time Warner already faced several legal challenges to the initial app, if the new features arrive tomorrow we'll see whether Viacom and other content providers head back to the courts for round two, or if any complaints have been negotiated away already

iPod, iPhone and iPad Docking Stations

Docking Stations

A docking station is a device that allows you to charge and/or play your iPod, iPhone or iPad. The dock is simply the part that holds your iPod in place and connects the iPod to the station. There are many different types of iPod docking stations all with their own set of features and style.

Charging Station

This is basically a dock that will connect with your Apple device and charge it for you. These come in many shapes, sizes and styles. Obviously they make ones designed for the iPod only as well as others for the iPad only. There are some stations that allow for more than one iPod or iPhone to be charged at the same time. Charging stations are a simple way to replace the need to plug in your iPod to the computer for charging.

Portable Speakers

Portable speakers or also known as "iPod Docking Stations", are a great way to share your music and bring it with you anywhere you go. The dock is designed the same as any other docking station. However, it is built into a set of or single speaker(s). Again, with many different styles, an iPod docking station allows you to play your music almost anywhere. They can run on batteries for up to 8 or even 12 hours. These are perfect for camping or any vacation. The features will vary depending on which type of system you're looking for. You can get a pretty simple speaker that replaces a set of headphones where songs are controlled from your iPod. Or go the more fancy route that allows you to navigate through your songs with a LCD screen display or controls on the station itself. A good iPhone docking station will charge your iPhone while it plays music. Not all systems will support this feature. Be sure to check into this first. Having your battery being charged instead of drained while being used is always a better option.

Alarm Clock docks are another small but useful accessory to have. Just like any other alarm clock, these include AM/FM radio, alarm setting and digital clock display. When you add a dock to the picture, you then have the option to play your own music as well as wake up to your own music! This can also be used as a place to charge you iPod or iPhone.

iPad Docking Stations

An iPad Docking station is similar to the devices that have been mentioned above just bigger and designed slightly different. With all the features on an iPad or iPad 2, they are basically a Mac or PC. With this in mind, iPad docking stations are designed to make using your iPad much easier. Always looking down at it and using an iPad flat on the table must get uncomfortable after a while. With a rotating or stationary speaker dock for you iPod, you can play movies and games from a much better angle. This also gives you the advantage of charging your iPad while using it. The speakers on a iPad are good but with a docking station you can really bump some tunes or watch a music with good volume. Rotating docks are very useful with their ability to spin and display your iPad at a vertical or horizontal angle.

Home Theatre Docks

Connecting you iPod device to a stereo is not a hard process if you have the right cords. If you want, you can skip this and just purchase a stereo stand or set that has the docking station built in or connected already. Just like any other stereo system these come with a set of speakers, 2 or more and maybe a sub woofer. The extra part is the dock that allows you to easily play your music loud and clear. Stereo Stands are nice and simple. They provide a tower design with the dock on top for easy access. These can easily be placed in a corner and out of the way, yet still shake a room.

In the same category are home Theatre Systems. These are more designed for movies and gaming. With a good quality set of surround sound speakers in your room your movies can go from good to Awesome! It is still so easy to play your music through these speakers with today's technology.

The Great Indian Phone Book: How the Cheap Cell Phone Changes Business, Politics, and Daily Life

In 2001, India had 4 million cell phone subscribers. Ten years later, that number had exploded to more than 750 million. Over just a decade, the mobile phone was transformed from a rare and unwieldy instrument to a palm-sized, affordable staple, taken for granted by poor fishermen in Kerala and affluent entrepreneurs in Mumbai alike. The Great Indian Phone Book investigates the social revolution ignited by what may be the most significant communications device in history, one which has disrupted more people and relationships than the printing press, wristwatch, automobile, or railways, though it has qualities of all four.

In this fast-paced study, Assa Doron and Robin Jeffrey explore the whole ecosystem of the cheap mobile phone. Blending journalistic immediacy with years of field-research experience in India, they portray the capitalists and bureaucrats who control the cellular infrastructure and wrestle over bandwidth rights, the marketers and technicians who bring mobile phones to the masses, and the often poor, village-bound users who adapt these addictive and sometimes troublesome devices to their daily lives. Examining the challenges cell phones pose to a hierarchy-bound country, the authors argue that in India, where caste and gender restrictions have defined power for generations, the disruptive potential of mobile phones is even greater than elsewhere.

The Great Indian Phone Book is a rigorously researched, multidimensional tale of what can happen when a powerful and readily available technology is placed in the hands of a large, still predominantly poor population.

Apple Breaks Tradition Anew With a New iPad Release in February

Apple has already sold more than 120 million since 2010.  This is a testament on how this nifty gadget was able to take things around and made people want to have one.  It clearly is a major agent of change because it was the release of the iPad that made people realize the convenience of mobile computing being offered by tablet PCs, something that models that came before it were not able to achieve. It is now a common sight for people to have at least one tablet PC in their home and soon, it will become a standard fixture in our lives, much like what mobile phones are to us today.

It is known that Apple has been setting a schedule as to when they would be bringing out new items into its product line.  This is to give time and space for each new product to be known, as well as to maximize the sales of the units.  Apple usually debuts products once a year, until they broke that cycle in 2012. Now, it looks like they are releasing new products twice a year, which is usually scheduled March and October.  However, this year, Apple is veering away from what they usually do by announcing a new version of the iPad, which has more storage capacity than its previous models as early as February.

The new model will be released on February 5, a few days after it was announced to the public.  The new model of the iPad will have the same specs as the 4th generation model, but with a bigger storage capacity of 128GB.  This is twice the current maximum storage of the previous models.  It will still have the 9.7-inch Retina display and dual core A6X chip with quad core graphics capabilities.  Another added feature of this new version is that it will come installed with the iOS 6.1 operating system that includes support for LTE networks approved by Apple worldwide.  The suggested retail prices for this new version are $799 for WiFi only model and $929 for the WiFi + Cellular model.

This move by Apple is believed to boost their product in line to compete directly with the coming Microsoft Surface Pro tablet.  Of course, Apple’s aim is to be ahead of its competitors and is doing everything to achieve that goal.  No one doubts their position in the market because of the fact that they have already sold 120 million units of the iPad since its launch in 2010.

But then, with the company reportedly decreasing orders for parts after decreased demand for the iPad Mini and iPhone 5, it seems there’s a chip in Apple’s seemingly flawless armor. The break from the routine new product release cycle is clearly a marketing move by the company to boost sales and retain its top position in the market.

This would also mean that we should not expect any further debuts for a new iPad this coming spring as Apple announced that units with upgraded storage capacity are already available online and in most of their authorized resellers worldwide. People may be thinking if this boost in the storage is really needed.  However, a lot of people who have learned to utilize their iPads for work surely appreciate this move because this would mean more space for their files, documents and presentations.  But with the price of the unit going up, not everyone would be able to afford it. Thus, many would still opt to go for the unit with lower storage capacity and more affordable price.

But then again, users with an iPad 4 can sell their iPads to refurbishing establishments like Cash for iPads.com and get top dollar for their gadgets. The proceeds of the quick and convenient transaction, plus just a few more hundred dollars, can already be used to buy that pricey iPad with expanded storage. That definitely softens the blow from having to purchase a $799 iPad after buying another iPad just a few months ago for also close to $700.
