PlayStation 4 Specs and Features - Sony's New Console is Coming

Sony is one of the biggest names when it comes to electronics. They make everything, but they’re popular for their entertainment devices. Their smartphones, tablets, TV’s and stereos are a big hit among consumers. However, they established their dominance by releasing a gaming console that took the world by storm – the PlayStation.

The PlayStation Through the Years

For over 19 years, Sony has dominated the gaming console market. The PlayStation brand has been a household name since its release back in 1994. Subsequent releases of the PlayStation prove that gaming consoles are a vital part of any home. The PlayStation 2 was an even bigger hit, thanks to its home theater capabilities and improved graphics. The PlayStation 3 was even better thanks to games that bring together groups of people, such as Rock Band.

Since the PlayStation 3 is more than six years old now, consumers are wondering when the new PlayStation will come out. Well, Sony is about to answer that question. They’ll be introducing the new PlayStation on February 20, 2013.

The Innards of the New PlayStation

Many people are wondering though, what will the new PlayStation contain? There are no official releases yet, but it is rumored that the next PlayStation’s hardware will be provided by American Micro Devices (AMD).

The processor is purported to be the A8 – 3850 APU. It provides a good balance between power consumption and speed. It’s a quad – core processor with a clock speed of 2.9 GHz. It already has a discrete video card built – in.

For the graphics, it will feature the R10xx GPU. It’s different from the desktop graphic cards AMD is known for. It will be smaller and cheaper, but nonetheless more powerful than the one used in the PlayStation 3. No word on the official specs of the GPU though.

Memory will be 4 GB tops.

Other hardware details include a 160 GB hard drive for minimum storage and a Blu – ray drive. For audio, there’s support for 2.0, 5.1, and 7.1 surround sound and HDMI. There will also be four USB 3.0 ports to plug in the controllers.

Controller Redesign

Speaking of which, there’s a big rumor circling around that the new PlayStation will feature a redesign. Everyone knows the look of the old PlayStation controllers, so it would be interesting to see how the new one will look.

With any luck, we’ll get to see additional features, instead of a radical redesign. Dubbed the Orbis Development Tool, it will feature a touchpad, or a touch screen that will display information from whatever game you’re playing.

Others

Other probable updates include the way we think of user accounts when playing. In the PlayStation 3, you’re assigned to one account only. However, it is rumored that the next PlayStation will allow multiple user logins. Players will simply log in whenever an extra controller is added.

Conclusion

With these additions, no doubt the new PlayStation will make waves in the electronics industry. We’ll just have to wait and see what Sony has come up with. In the meantime, take comfort in the fact that there will be a new generation of consoles coming this year.
