WordPlaySound.com - an MP3 feast for those who love stories

Love mp3s? So do we. Love fiction? Pod casts and iTunes? You're in luck. Just in time for 2012 is a hot new Chicago-based non-profit web site magazine, WordPlaySound.com. The February 23rd issue will feature audio pieces by Doug Shiloh, Zach Dodson, Lindsay Hunter, and B.J. Hollars. Editor Ryan Singleton will also contribute a piece of creative nonfiction. WordPlaySound.com is a new monthly online magazine launched in December, 2011, and was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) literary nonprofit magazine with the State of Illinois in January 2012. Beginning in March, the magazine will produce interviews with people and organizations in the literary community between issues.

"Our mission is to provide relevant, thought-provoking audio-literature through pod casts," Singleton said. "We understand literature to include both fiction and creative nonfiction, and we choose to publish it in sound in order to incorporate the dialects, pronunciations, accents, and authorial interpretation that are often lost in written word alone." Doug Shiloh, a former Chicagoan, sees the publication as a way for the author and audience to connect on a deeper level. His nine-minute short story, "The Six-Foot Lobster" is set in Chicago's famed Loop.

"Just as the Internet took everything to the next level, so does a reading of a story [by its author]," Shiloh said. "There's nothing like hearing a tale from the original source. It's hearing it from a new angle." How does WordPlaySound.com distinguish itself from other audio-lit magazines? "In the vast sea of literary magazines, many publishers strive to tap humanity’s ancient roots by blending an oral tradition of storytelling with modern technology," Singleton said. "Though this approach has many virtues, it is not our magazine’s objective. At WordPlaySound, we’re interested in the way the sounds of words affect a story’s meaning, affect a listener’s experience."

Stories will appear at the web site, http://www.wordplaysound.com, as well as through RSS feeds, or free pod casts at iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast//id490510633). The URL for the magazine's RSS feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wordplaysound

Singleton added: "Listeners can enter their email addresses into the appropriate box on our website (www.wordplaysound.com), and the magazine/featured content will be automatically  emailed to them."
